Senior Activities at a Licensed Adult Day Care in Germantown, Philadelphia

Penn Village Adult Day Care is a licensed adult day program on W. Chelten Avenue in Germantown, serving families across Northwest Philadelphia and the surrounding neighborhoods. Our 10,000 square foot, fully ADA-accessible center gives older adults somewhere to go during the day — somewhere with structure, company, and something to look forward to — while the family caring for them works, rests, or manages everything else.

The Senior Activities Program is what fills that day. It is not a room with a television on. Participants spend their time in guided group activities chosen to keep them mentally sharp, physically moving, and socially connected — with licensed nursing staff on site, meals provided, and door-to-door transportation available.

Our Senior Activities Program at Penn Village Adult Day Care helps older adults stay active, engaged, and socially connected—three key elements for maintaining health and happiness. This program offers a purposeful mix of fun and connection through age-appropriate activities that stimulate both mind and body.

Whether your loved one enjoys creating beautiful crafts, a lively game of bingo, or safe movement and mobility-based games, they’ll find something to look forward to each day. Expressing Creativity Through Art

Arts and Crafts sessions give our seniors a chance to relax, express themselves, and enjoy the simple joy of creating something beautiful. Whether it’s working with vibrant colors or exploring new techniques, each session encourages creativity, boosts confidence, and provides a calming, joyful outlet for self-expression.

Energizing, Movement-Based Activities

Physical activity is an essential part of supporting health, mobility, and joy. Our seniors love getting active with fun, low-impact games—especially basketball and volleyball. These sessions spark laughter, boost confidence, and create meaningful connection through movement.

Safe, Inclusive, & Personalized Care

Our Senior Activities Program is led by a compassionate, trained team dedicated to ensuring that every participant feels safe, supported, and included. We carefully adapt activities to fit each person’s mobility, cognitive ability, and comfort level—so no one is left out.

At the same time, we take the time to learn about each senior’s unique needs and interests. For example, some may need extra help during a group game, while others prefer a calm, creative space. Either way, we meet each individual where they are.

At Penn Village Adult Day Care, every person is valued and respected. We encourage everyone to participate at their own pace. As a result, the Senior Activities Program builds a strong sense of belonging, confidence, and joy—making each day safe, meaningful, and uplifting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Activities Program

Common questions from families deciding whether an adult day program is the right fit. If yours isn't here, get in touch and we'll answer it directly.

What activities do you offer at Penn Village?
Our daily schedule mixes social, creative, physical, and cognitive activities. On any given day that includes bingo and card games, arts and crafts, puzzles and board games, arcade basketball, seated volleyball, indoor bowling, darts, music and karaoke, and group discussion. We also build in gentle movement and relaxation sessions. Activities rotate so there is always something new, and participants choose what they join.
What does a typical day of activities look like?
Days follow a predictable rhythm, which matters a great deal for participants living with memory loss. Mornings usually open with greetings, a wellness check, and a light group activity. Mid-morning moves into a creative or cognitive session such as crafts or games. A nutritious meal follows, then an afternoon of movement-based or social activity before pickup. The structure stays consistent day to day while the specific activities change.
What if my loved one doesn't want to join in?
That is one of the most common worries families bring us, and it is normal. Nobody is pushed into anything. Many participants spend their first days simply watching, sitting near a table, or talking with staff, and join in when they feel ready. Our team pays attention to what each person actually enjoys and invites them into those activities specifically rather than treating the group as one block.
Can someone with dementia or memory loss take part in group activities?
Yes. A large share of our participants live with Alzheimer's, dementia, or other cognitive changes. Activities are chosen and paced so they stay achievable rather than frustrating, and staff give cues and hands-on help where it is useful. The consistent daily structure itself is part of the benefit. You can read more on our memory care and cognitive support page.
Are activities adapted for wheelchairs, walkers, or limited mobility?
Yes. Our facility is fully ADA accessible and activities are designed to be played seated. Volleyball, bowling, basketball, and darts all have seated versions our participants take part in from wheelchairs and chairs. Nobody is left on the sidelines because of mobility.
Do you offer physical activity or exercise?
We do, at a level that suits older adults and people recovering from a stroke or injury. That means seated volleyball, arcade basketball, indoor bowling, darts, stretching, and gentle movement and relaxation sessions rather than strenuous exercise. Staff supervise throughout and adjust to each person's ability on the day.
Can my loved one attend just a few days a week?
Yes. Attendance is flexible and families choose the schedule that fits. Many participants come a few days a week to stay active and connected while caregivers work or manage other responsibilities.
Is transportation to and from the center provided?
Yes. We offer door-to-door transportation and coordinate pickup and drop-off around your location and schedule, covering Germantown, Mount Airy, Chestnut Hill, West Philadelphia, North Philadelphia and surrounding neighborhoods. See our transportation services page for details.
Does insurance or Medicaid cover the activities program?
Often, yes. For participants enrolled in Pennsylvania's Home and Community Based Services waiver, the OBRA waiver, or covered through VA benefits, the full cost of attending Penn Village can be covered. Competitive private-pay rates are also available. Our team can walk you through which route applies to your family, see Medicaid and waiver program assistance.
Can we visit and watch an activity session before enrolling?
Please do, we encourage it, and most families decide after seeing the room in person. You are welcome to tour during program hours so you can watch an activity in progress and meet the staff who would be working with your loved one. Schedule a tour whenever it suits you.
