Stroke and brain injury day program

Penn Village is an adult day program for people living with the effects of a stroke or brain injury.

Penn Village Adult Day Care is a licensed adult day center at 200-220 W. Chelten Avenue in Germantown, Philadelphia. Members recovering from a stroke, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or another brain injury spend the day with us for adapted activities, meals, supervision and nursing oversight.

Our vans bring them from home and back. They keep living at home, and their days have structure, company and something to work toward.

Why families choose us

Why a day program helps after a stroke or brain injury.

Most of the families who call us are looking for help for someone they love. Here are the reasons families choose Penn Village for that help.

Their days have a routine again.

After a stroke or brain injury, the weeks at home can feel long and shapeless. A set schedule of activities, meals and rest helps with memory, energy and mood.

They keep using the skills they worked on in therapy.

Moving, talking, following steps, playing a game, eating with others... Everyday activities at the center give them a reason to keep using what they practiced in rehab. We work alongside their therapists and doctors, not in place of them.

They spend the day with other people.

Many people become isolated after a brain injury. Here they can talk, joke and spend time with others who understand what recovery is like.

A nurse keeps an eye on their health.

A nurse is on staff, vitals are checked monthly, and concerns are shared with their doctor. Blood pressure changes, new weakness or a change in mood can be noticed early.

The center is built for easy movement.

Everything is on one 10,000 square foot floor that is fully ADA accessible, and bathrooms have safety railings.

Families get support throughout the week.

While your family member is with us, you can work, rest and take care of yourself too. See caregiver and family support.

After a brain injury

How we support members living with a brain injury.

A traumatic brain injury can affect memory, attention, planning, energy and mood. Our day program gives structure and support around those changes.

A predictable schedule.

The day runs in the same order each time, which helps with memory and fatigue. Rest is built in.

Practice with everyday tasks.

Getting ready to leave, eating with others, following the steps of a game or craft... Daily routines give gentle practice with everyday activities. Read traumatic brain injury and activities of daily living.

Calm support for changes in behavior.

Frustration and irritability can follow a brain injury. Staff stay calm, give space, and help members back into the day.

Company and conversation.

Group activities and meals give members time with people every day they attend.

Common questions

Questions families ask about day programs after a stroke or brain injury.

What is a day program for adults with brain injury?

It is a daytime program where adults living with a brain injury spend the day in a supervised group setting, with structured activities, meals and health oversight. They go home in the afternoon.

Is a day program the same as outpatient therapy?

No. Penn Village is an adult day program, not a therapy clinic. Members can keep their outpatient therapy appointments, and the day program gives structure, activity and company on the other days of the week.

Can someone in a wheelchair attend?

Yes. The center is one fully ADA-accessible floor, bathrooms have safety railings, and our vans are wheelchair accessible.

How soon after a stroke can someone start adult day care?

Many people start once they are home from the hospital or rehab and medically stable. Their doctor can help you decide. Read the first 90 days at home after a stroke.

Does Medicaid pay for a brain injury day program?

Pennsylvania Medicaid covers adult day care through Community HealthChoices for people who qualify. Call us and we will tell you what applies to your family member.
