VA Benefits
Here’s a benefit that quietly goes unclaimed: the widow or widower of a veteran may qualify for a monthly VA payment that helps cover care — including adult day care. If you’re caring for a parent whose late spouse served, this is worth reading.
Most people have heard of VA benefits for veterans. Far fewer know that when a veteran passes away, their spouse may still qualify for VA support of their own — including a monthly benefit that can help pay for care. If you’re caring for a mother or father whose late husband or wife served, this one is often missed.
What Aid & Attendance is — for a surviving spouse
Aid & Attendance is an enhancement added to a VA pension for people who need help with everyday activities. For a surviving spouse, it attaches to the VA Survivors Pension: an eligible widow or widower of a wartime veteran who needs assistance during the day may receive a monthly benefit. Because the money is paid to them and can go toward care, it becomes a real way to help cover adult day care. For the veteran’s own version, see our guide to Aid & Attendance for adult day care in PA.
Who generally qualifies
1 Marriage to a qualifying veteran
The benefit is tied to the late veteran’s service, generally including wartime service. The surviving spouse’s eligibility flows from that record.
2 A demonstrated need for help
Aid & Attendance is for those who need assistance with daily activities or supervision — the same needs that make adult day care a good fit.
3 Income and asset limits
The Survivors Pension has financial requirements set by the VA. Many families assume they won’t qualify and are wrong — care costs are weighed in, so it’s worth checking.
A surviving spouse spent a lifetime beside someone who served. The support that follows from that service can still reach them — if someone tells them to ask.
How it helps pay for the day
Once approved, the monthly benefit is the surviving spouse’s to apply toward care — which can include a structured day at Penn Village. Paired with the affordability of adult day care’s daily-rate model (more on that in our guide to ways to pay for adult day care), it can bring the real out-of-pocket cost down substantially. The day itself: a supervised, engaging day in our ADA-accessible Germantown center, with licensed nursing oversight, meals, activities, and door-to-door transportation.
How to start
Your first steps
- Gather the late veteran’s discharge paperwork (DD‑214) and the marriage and death records.
- Contact an accredited VA benefits representative or Veterans Service Organization to file for the Survivors Pension with Aid & Attendance — they help at no cost.
- Ask the adult day center whether they accept VA-supported participants — Penn Village does.
- Call us and we’ll help you understand how the benefit can offset the cost of the day.
If you’ve been quietly covering a parent’s care yourself, this may be the help you didn’t know was there. Let’s find out together.
